My name is Miguel, I live in Brisbane but I’m originally from Colombia. I came to Australia with the purpose of learning English in 2020, when the Covid19 pandemic just started. I have a degree in finance, and I used to work in a Bank in Colombia.

Hola. Mi nombre es Miguel, vivo en Brisbane, pero soy de Colombia. Vine a Australia con la idea de aprender inglés en 2020, cuando la pandemia empezó. Tengo un título Universitario en Contaduría pública y finanzas internacionales y solía trabajar en un banco.

Something that has always filled me with joy is being able to go out into the garden and tend to the small and beautiful plants that, with enough attention and care, can grow and produce beautiful and delicious fruits and vegetables. I remember gardening with my Grandmother in Colombia and being so impressed by her loving ways of pruning, weeding, watering, and gathering fruits that she then shared with our neighbours, friends, and with us.

Algo que me llena de alegría es poder hacer jardinería, cuidar de pequeñas y hermosas plantas que, con suficiente atención van a crecer para dar hermosas flores y deliciosas frutas y verduras. Recuerdo cuidar de las plantas con mi abuela en Colombia y asombrarme con su forma de podar, deshierbar, regar y recoger frutas, que ella compartía con nuestra familia y amigos.

In December 2019, In preparation for my trip to Australia, I took several medical exams. After some routine check-up, I was diagnosed with HIV. At the time, I had little knowledge about HIV treatment. As a new international student, I was worried about going through all of this by myself in a new country. Despite the fear, I decided to come to Australia and was relieved to realise that you can enter and stay in Australia on a Student Visa with little to no problems.

En diciembre de 2019 mientras me preparaba para mi viaje a Australia, me tuve que realizar varios exámenes médicos de rutina, y fui diagnosticado con VIH, en ese momento no sabia mucho el tratamiento para el VIH, y como un nuevo estudiante internacional estaba asustado de tener que pasar por estas cosas solo en un nuevo país.  A pesar del miedo, decidí venir a Australia y me sentí liberado al darme cuenta que puedes entrar y permanecer en Australia en una visa estudiante (viviendo con VIH) teniendo pocos o ningún problema.

Living with HIV can be different for everyone, as people's experiences with the virus can vary depending on a variety of factors, such as their access to medical care and treatment, the stage of the disease, and their overall health and well-being. I was very lucky because when I was diagnosed the virus was in an early stage. I have been able to access treatment through a local sexual health clinic on the Gold Coast, which then referred me to a clinic up here in Brisbane. It was really easy to get connected and to get access, and even though I wasn’t eligible for Medicare, the cost of treatment was about $30 for 2 months.

Vivir con VIH puede ser diferente para cada persona, la experiencia de cada uno con el virus puede variar, dependiendo de muchos factores, como acceso a tratamiento médico, la etapa de desarrollo del virus, y el estado general de salud y bienestar.  Yo fui muy afortunado, porque cuando fui diagnosticado el virus estaba en una etapa muy temprana. Pude acceder a tratamiento a través de una clínica local de salud sexual en Gold Coast que posteriormente me refirió a una clínica aquí en Brisbane. Fue muy fácil tener acceso al tratamiento, a pesar de no tener Medicare el costo del tratamiento fue aproximadamente AUD 30 por 2 meses.

Now that I have been on treatment and undetectable, I am living a healthy and happy life, where the impact of my HIV status doesn’t interfere with how I live. This is important because there is still a strong negative stigma in communities that think that HIV is a ‘death sentence’ or will lead to lifelong difficulties. Treatment is now so advanced and accessible that this is no longer the case. Now, it is like many other chronic conditions, in that it can be managed in a way that it doesn’t interfere with your life.

Ahora que he estado en tratamiento y con carga viral indetectable, estoy viviendo una vida feliz y saludable, en la que vivir con VIH no interfiere con el resto de mi vida. Esto es importante porque aún hay   estigma muy grande en las comunidades, muchas personas aun piensan que tener VIH es una sentencia de muerte o una vida llena de enfermedades recurrentes y sufrimiento. Hoy en día el tratamiento es tan avanzado y accesible que VHI se ha convertido en una condición manejable como cualquier otra condición crónica.

The primary goal of HIV treatment is to reduce the amount of the virus in the body, known as the viral load, to undetectable levels. This is how the amount of HIV is measured in a person’s blood, measured with a viral load test. Effective HIV treatment can reduce a person’s viral load to a point where it is known as undetectable.

La meta principal del tratamiento contra el VIH es reducir el numero de copias del virus en nuestro cuerpo, conocido como carga viral a niveles indetectables. Esta es la forma como la cantidad del virus se mide en la sangre de las personas, con una prueba de carga viral.

This is important not only for the health of the person with HIV, but also for preventing the transmission of the virus to others. People who take HIV medication consistently and correctly, & have an undetectable viral load for at least 6 months, can't pass on HIV to their sexual partners. So, for me it’s great news that I’m undetectable and that I know I can’t pass on HIV.

Esto es importante no solo para quienes vivimos con VIH, sino también para prevenir la transmisión del virus a otros. Las personas que tomamos medicación para VIH de manera correcta y consistente, y con una carga viral indetectable durante al menos seis meses, no podemos para VIH a nuestras parejas sexuales. Para mi estar indetectable fue una gran noticia, porque no puedo pasar el virus.

When taken consistently and correctly, treatment can significantly reduce the amount of virus in the body, allowing the immune system to recover and prevent the development of AIDS-related illnesses.

El tratamiento ayuda también al sistema inmunológico a recuperarse y prevenir el desarrollo del SIDA.

My HIV treatment is easy! Just one pill every day, and regular check-ups every 6 months. Now, I’m looking to change my treatment to injections, but it's something that I have to discuss with my doctor.

If I move to injectable HIV treatment, this will mean I only have to have one injection every 2 months.

Mi tratamiento para VIH es ¡fácil! Solo una píldora cada día y exámenes de rutina cada seis meses. Y ahora, quiero cambiar mi tratamiento a inyecciones, pero es algo que debo discutir con mi doctor. Si me cambio a el tratamiento con inyectables, solo voy a tener que recibir una inyección cada dos meses.

Despite all the challenges that I have been through, I have a healthy life, I have the medical care that I need, friends, a partner, and a dog that I love. Since I was diagnosed, I’m more aware of my health needs, and I do my best to take care of myself and take control of my health.

A pesar de todos los desafíos por los que he pasado, tengo una vida sana, tengo el tratamiento medico que necesito, amigos, una pareja y un perro al que amo.  Desde que fui diagnosticado, soy mas consiente de lo que necesito para mantener una buena salud, y hago lo mejor que puedo para cuidar de mi y tener el control de mi salud.
